Cochlear Implants
Advanced Hearing Solutions for Severe Hearing Loss
Upper Valley Hearing & Balance Inc. understands that traditional hearing aids are not appropriate for every need. For those patients with severe or profound hearing loss, cochlear implants can open up the world of sound in new ways. They do this by restoring access to voices, music, and the most meaningful moments in life. We are pleased to serve the people of Troy and the surrounding Miami Valley. Our audiologists provide expert evaluations, followed by fitting and long-term support so that every patient can hear and live to their fullest.

Cochlear Implants Explained
Cochlear implants are advanced medical devices that are designed for people whose hearing loss cannot be adequately improved with hearing aids alone. The cochlear implant does not amplify sound in the same way; instead, it bypasses the damaged parts of the inner ear and directly stimulates the auditory nerve. This allows the brain to interpret sound signals.
We partner with leading hearing technology brands, including ReSound, whose devices are fully compatible with modern cochlear implant systems. The connection builds seamless sound quality and improved communication in a variety of listening environments. Each cochlear implant system has two main components:
An internal implant placed by an ear surgeon
An external sound processor that captures and transmits sound.
Evaluation and Candidacy
Everybody has a different cochlear implant journey, but it always begins with an evaluation. Our audiologists take all the time needed to understand your hearing history, communication necessities, and lifestyle goals well before recommending this advanced option. During this evaluation, we will perform:
- Diagnostic hearing testing that will determine the type and degree of your hearing loss
- Speech recognition assessments that will measure your ability to understand spoken words
- A medical review and coordination with ENT specialists for surgical consultation.
If you are a candidate for implantation, we will guide you through every step of the process. This includes presurgical counseling to activation and beyond. We want to make sure you have a full understanding of what to expect.
Understanding The Process
Assessment
Comprehensive testing to confirm candidacy and identify the most effective treatment path.
Implantation
Outpatient procedure performed by an ENT specialist to place the internal device.
Activation & Programming
Your audiologist activates and programs your sound processor for optimal clarity and comfort.
Ongoing Support
Continuous follow-up visits to adjust programming and support auditory training for best results.
What to Expect After Activation
Your implant is typically activated two to four weeks after surgery. During this visit, we’ll turn on the sound processor and begin fine-tuning your hearing experience.
Patient Education and Support
At Upper Valley Hearing & Balance Inc., cochlear implant care extends well beyond activation day. We provide ongoing auditory rehabilitation, education, and family counseling. This is a way to help you regain confidence in communication. Our personalized approach includes aspects like guided listening exercises, progress tracking, and support throughout. This can help as you learn to interpret new sounds or adjust to your processor. It can also help combine your implant with other hearing technology. We want to help make your transition smooth and empowering.
