VNG Testing

Find Your Balance Again

Life gets tough when dizziness throws things off track. Staying steady matters when you are moving around the house, getting out of bed, or hitting the road for some fun. At the Upper Valley Hearing & Balance Inc. clinic in Troy, Ohio, hearing experts run Video Nystagmography (VNG) scans to trace where dizzy spells originate. We can then map out what works best for relief. With high-tech checks and compassionate attention, we aim to get you back to feeling secure, stable, and back in control.

Understanding VNG Testing

Video Nystagmography (VNG) is one of the most accurate and widely used tests for diagnosing inner ear and balance disorders. It works by measuring eye movements, which are directly linked to how your brain and inner ear help maintain equilibrium. We evaluate how your eyes respond to specific visual and positional stimuli. Your audiologist can then pinpoint whether your dizziness or vertigo stems from the inner ear (vestibular system), brain, or some other cause.

VNG is entirely noninvasive and typically only takes around an hour to 90 minutes. Most patients experience only mild sensations of movement throughout the test. These are temporary and usually well-tolerated.

Why Testing Matters

Balance issues typically originate in the inner ear, but without the proper testing, they can be challenging to diagnose. VNG testing provides the detailed insight needed to:

  • Identify vestibular disorders, like benign paroxysmal vertigo (BPPV), vestibular neuritis, or labyrinthitis.
  • Distinguish inner ear causes of dizziness from visual or neurological ones.
  • Help guide effective treatment or rehabilitation, including vestibular therapy or medical referral.

By understanding the source of your balance issues, we can then design a care plan that restores steadiness and helps prevent future falls. This is the essential goal for patients of all ages in the Miami Valley region.

What Happens During VNG Testing

Preparation

You’ll wear lightweight infrared goggles that record your eye movements as you follow visual targets on a screen.

Positional Testing

Your audiologist will gently guide you through head and body positions to observe how your balance system reacts to movement.

Caloric Stimulation

A small amount of warm and cool air or water is introduced into the ear canal to assess each ear’s response individually.

Results & Review

Your audiologist will explain the findings and outline the next steps for treatment or further testing, if needed.
